6 Characteristics of a Godly Father

What comes to your mind when thinking of characteristics of a godly father?

Blessed with a godly Father

One cannot help but think about their father when Father’s Day rolls around.  Truth is – I think about my father many more times than that! I am so thankful that He was a godly father!  He left this earthly life in 1994 (wow, has it really been that long ago!) and went to his home in heaven where he now enjoys fellowship with his heavenly Father.  What an awesome day that must have been, meeting the Savior face to face for the first time.  As the hymn writer wrote:
Face to face! O blissful moment!
Face to face—to see and know;
Face to face with my Redeemer,
Jesus Christ who loves me so.

 Godly Father Acrostic

What do you think about when your Father comes to mind?  I am blessed that I can compare mine to God, in that He was a very godly example to me!  What a blessing to have a godly father!

F – My dad was my friend

Although my father, He was also my friend, not a buddy, but a true genuine friend.  He loved His children so much!  He spent time with us and most of all He taught us what a real Christian was by living an example of a godly father.  One of my most cherished memories of him was being able to ride along to one of his jobs (he was self employed) and we would talk, talk, talk, and while we did he would teach me God’s Word and use every day examples of why we ought to live for Him  – I always loved this!
Jesus too is my friend – in fact, my very best friend!  He laid down his life for me and walks with me daily every step of the way. He is willing to be your friend too. John 15:13  Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

 A – My dad was an author of my life

 He was definitely an authority in my life and helped to direct my steps and mold me into the person God wanted me to be.
God is the final author of my life.  As God’s Word says He is the author and finisher of my life and I need to look to Him daily for wisdom and direction and then allow Him to mold me into the person He wants me to be.  Hebrews 12:2  Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

T-My dad was truthful

I never had reason to doubt his world.  I asked him for advice and I knew he would always tell me the truth.

But there is one who is the absolute Truth and that one is Jesus – He is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6),  His Word is truth; it can be trusted and we need never doubt what He tells us.  Psalms 33:4  For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth.

H – My dad was my hero

He could do no wrong.   I could run to my dad and let him hide me from it all. He protected me and surrounded me with his love giving me strength to go on.  He always encouraged me to do right and follow the Lord.  He was there for me whenever I needed him.

Jesus too is my hero, my protector, my strength, my hiding place . He never leaves me nor forsakes me. Psalms 32:7  Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.  Hebrews 13:5  . . . for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

Another hymn goes like this:
I have found a hiding place when sore distressed,
Jesus, Rock of Ages, strong and true;
In a weary land I in His shadow rest,
He is my strength in all that I do.

E – My dad was my encourager

He always encouraged me to do right and follow the Lord. He was diligent to encourage me in the Lord.
Jesus is the best encourager.   If I am depressed, discouraged, in a trial, . . .  I can go to his Word anytime and find the encouragement I need.  1 Samuel 30:6  And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God.
Psalms 42:5  Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.

R – My dad was a rock for me

He stood firm in what he believed and I felt safe letting that rock hold me up.
Jesus took my feet from the miry clay and set me on a rock to stay.  What a blessing that is!  He is my eternal Rock on which I can always feel safe and secure.
Psalms 27:5  For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.
Psalms 40:2  He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.
A godly father is truly a great blessing!  Maybe you were not blessed with a godly Father, but God sent His Son, Jesus who is willing to be your Heavenly Father and give to anyone who asks abundant life!

A beautiful tribute to your father, Ellen. He left an awesome legacy he can be proud of. Thank you for sharing with Thankful Thursdays.

By this definition, my father has not been a godly father, but he has been my godly fate. Thank you Jesus for making my father who he is that I may become who I am today. Help me to appreciate that by showing him patience and mercy.

    Glad you are able to give thanks for your father in spite of who he might have been. We are all sinners in need of the Savior. Praise God He is the perfect Father who we can go to at any time with our requests. That is a great request to appreciate the man your father is by showing him patience and mercy. Oh how patient and merciful the Savior is with us.
