And God Blessed Noah and His Sons
The flood had ended. Noah and his family had a new beginning and God blessed them. Every trial brings new beginnings and fresh starts. It is often after the trials that we see the immense blessings of God!
And God blessed Noah and his sons
- Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth. – What a great blessing from God to be saved from His wrath and have the privilege of reproducing and starting a whole new earth! v1
- Man would be feared by all the animals and birds and fish and anything that moved on the earth. v2
- All moving things would be meat for the family along with the green herbs. Meat and vegetables – isn’t this a wonderful blessing in your own household when your plate is filled with good food? v3
- The shedding of man’s blood will require the blood of the guilty one. Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: Why? because we are made in the image of God. v4-6
- God promised fruitfulness and abundant multiplication. Perhaps Noah was not just to be fruitful in reproducing children, but his walk with God should also be a fruitful walk. Col_1:10 That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;
- God’s Covenant v 9-17
- What a wonderful blessing to see the rainbow in the clouds and realize that this was God’s token that the waters would never become an earthly flood to destroy all again. This token still exists today. No one can deny that God has not kept His promise. In His wrath, God remembered mercy. Out of wrath shines His love and the rainbow is that token of His love reminding us once again of His great mercy.
- I wonder if after the flood, did Noah and his family ever became anxious when they saw a storm approaching? But what a cheering sign it was to reassure them that in the heaviest storm came the rainbow recalling to their minds God’s promise. And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth. Genesis 9:11
And God said, This is the token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations: I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud: And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh. And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth. And God said unto Noah, This is the token of the covenant, which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth. Genesis 9:12-17
Does anyone tire of seeing a rainbow? Every time the storm passes and the sun starts shining through the clouds, I rush outside to see if there is a rainbow. Only God could and did do this! Even to the wicked who have tried to steal this symbol, it is a reminder to them of the long suffering of God and He is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. He saved the apostle Paul who states that he is the chiefest of sinners. I am so thankful that He saved a wretch like me!
Noah was still a sinner v 18-29
Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. We found grace through the Lord Jesus Christ when He saved us by faith through grace alone. (Eph. 2:809) Yet, though we have found grace, Noah and we are still sinners. Noah stayed sober in a drunken society when building the ark, but then became a drunk among those who were sober. Let us take heed when we think we stand, lest we fall. (1 Cor. 10:12)
Although we have found grace in the eyes of the Lord through Salvation, remember
- We are still sinners
- We still fail
- We may cause others to stumble
- Our sin affects others
- We can be restored to fellowship with God
- We will one day die, but as a child of God, I am really passing from death to life.
- Remind your self often that God’s Word says wine is a mocker
- Out of love and honor for their father, Shem and Japheth covered his nakedness. Jesus covers our sin by His blood out of His love for us. Have love one for another for love covers a multitude of sins.
Gen 10:1 Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood. Gen 9:19 These are the three sons of Noah: and of them was the whole earth overspread.
The command remained and still does today – Be fruitful and replenish the earth.
Out of the same holy stock may arise enemies to the church as well as the right seed. (Bib. Ill.)
God’s church has its family, tongue, place, and people distinct from all.
Act 17:26
God hath made of one blood all nations of men
for to dwell on all the face of the earth,
and hath determined the times before appointed,
and the bounds of their habitation;
