Lessons from the life of St. Patrick and Free Bible Lesson Download
St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17th; well at least many people celebrate this day. To me it was not really that big a deal while growing up. However, I have studied St. Patrick a little bit and have learned some lessons from his life. First of all this was not even his real name and secondly, March 17th is not his birthday, but the day he died.
Here are some lessons that I have learned from the life of St. Patrick.
1. Teach the Bible to your children while they are young.
You may be thinking, how do you get that lesson from St. Patrick’s life? Well, his father and grandfather taught him about the Lord and that is what sustained him while he was in slavery and caused him to turn to Christ himself. Remember the story of Moses? His parents undoubtedly taught him the Scriptures as much as possible before he moved into the palace. This eventually led to him being one of the greatest Spiritual leaders in the Bible.
2. Do not let “bad” or uncontrolled circumstances make you become bitter.
St. Patrick became a slave at the age of 16. He did not have an easy life. For 6 years he lived in slavery, yet it was during this time that he turned to Christ for all his needs. He did not become bitter, but instead allowed his circumstances to make him a better Christian. Some Biblical examples would be: Joseph, Samuel, Daniel, and the little maid who waited on Naaman’s wife.
3. We are all sinners and in need of a Savior.
St. Patrick realized his need of a Savior. While enslaved, something special happened to Patrick. He said,
“It was there that the Lord opened the understanding of my unbelieving heart, so that I should recall my sins, and turn with all my heart to the Lord, my God.”
He realized that he was not just a slave to the Irish, but also a slave to sin. Only Jesus can break our chains and set us free.
4. We need to forgive others no matter what they have done.
St. Patrick was able to forgive his captors and desired more than anything to see them saved.
Matthew 18:21-22 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.
5. We need to stay close to the Lord.
- Because St. Patrick spent time with the Lord, he knew when it was time to escape for his life. If we are spending time with the Lord as we ought each day, then the Holy Spirit can guide us, teach us, and direct us.
James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you.
Here is one of St. Patrick’s Prayers:
This day I call to me: God’s strength to direct me, God’s power to sustain me, God’s wisdom to guide me, God’s vision to light me, God’s ear to my hearing, God’s word to my speaking, God’s hand to uphold me, God’s pathway before me, God’s shield to protect me, God’s legions to save me.
6. Be determined, steadfast, persevere till the end.
St. Patrick never gave up. No matter what his circumstances were he persevered. Remember the Lord is with you always even to the ends of the earth.
7. My concern for the souls of others ought to be more than my own well-being.
St. Patrick desired that his captors receive the gospel and get saved. He did not care what they thought of him or how they treated him. He was more concerned about getting the gospel into their lives and heart.
8. We need to give our all to Christ.
St. Patrick was willing to give up any life of pleasure and live wholly for the Lord.
9. There are so many everyday objects that can be used to preach and teach about Jesus.
St. Patrick used a simple 3 leaf clover to teach about the trinity. 
10. Christ should daily be the center of my life.
