If you like waterfalls, then Roaring Falls should be added to your list.  It is an easy enough hike for Grandma to take and is quiet and relaxing.  If you are in the western NC mountains traveling the Blue Ridge  then Roaring Falls won’t be far away.

We drove along Hwy. 80 out of Marion which is a long winding road that crosses the Blue Ridge.  It is an interesting drive and as we drove we remembered a hike that we had done a few years ago-Roaring Falls.  We were glad for the opportunity to do it again and it is always so much fun to take the backroads.  You never know what you might come upon.

Want Directions to Roaring Falls?

From the intersection of NC 80 and the Blue Ridge Parkway, drive 2.2 miles north on NC 80 and turn left on South Toe River Road (look for sign for Black Mountain Campground). Cross the bridge and turn left toward Busick Work Center. Park on the left at the gated entrance to the center. You will see the sign for the half-mile trail to the falls on the right. After passing some old concrete bunkers formerly used to store explosives, you will see a small bridge and trail on the right by a stream. After a short walk, you will arrive at the base of the waterfall.
