The Candy Cane Story and Free Printable Bookmark
The first time I heard The Candy Cane Story, I thought it was a pretty good way to present Jesus as the Good Shepherd. It seems to be pretty popular now as you can find most anything on the internet these days. However, if you have never heard it you can read the story below.
The candy cane story
Once there was a candy maker who wanted to invent a candy that was a witness to Christ. The result was the candy cane.
First of all, he used a hard candy because
Christ is the ROCK of Ages. Psalms 40:2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. – This is only one of many verses that relates Jesus as our ROCK
This hard candy was shaped so that it would resemble either a “J” for JESUS or a shepherd’s staff.
He made it white to represent the
PURITY of Christ 1 John 3:2-3 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
Finally a red stripe was added to represent the
BLOOD Christ shed for the sins for the world; Mark 14:24 And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many. The three thinner red stripes represented the stripes He received on our behalf when the Roman soldiers whipped Him. Sometimes a green stripe is added as a reminder that Jesus is a GIFT from God.
The flavor of the candy cane is peppermint which is similar to hyssop. Hyssop is in the mint family and was used in the Old Testament for
PURIFICATION and SACRIFICE for the sins of the world. 1 John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
So the next time you see a candy cane, hear the sermon it preaches:
Jesus Christ, The Good Shepherd, is the sinless rock of Ages who suffered and died for our sins.
- (John 1:10) “I am the good shepherd, the good shepherd giveth His life for the sheep.”
- (John 10:27) “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:”
- John3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
