The story of Blind Bartamaeus teaches us how to be saved. This is yet another precious picture of how to get saved. Yes, the story is wonderful, because Jesus heard the cry of this blind man and called Bartimaeus to him and healed him.
God’s Word says in Mark 7:37 . . . He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak. And he also caused the blind to see. Yes, He does ALL things well, but the best thing He has done for all of us is to provide an abundant life through salvation in Jesus Christ.
Blind Bartamaeus teaches us how to be saved
Mark 10:45 For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
Yes, Jesus had compassion on the people and healed everywhere he went. He came to minister to all, but most of all He came to give his life a ransom and blind Bartimaeus not only received his physical sight, but more important, his spiritual sight.

As Jesus was passing through Jericho with his disciples, we find a great number of people also with him. It seems like people always wanted to follow Jesus because of all the miracles He did. And this was no exception.
We are blind beggars
There was a blind man named Bartimaeus on the highway begging.
Before salvation, we are like beggars – looking for something to satisfy our needs. We are blind to the truth because of our sin. But there is only one thing that can truly satisfy our needs and longings.
We need the mercy of God
Bartimaeus heard that Jesus was coming and he cried out for mercy – Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me!
He realized that without Jesus there was no hope and he began crying for His mercy. We must realize that Jesus is the only source of hope and He alone offers mercy for the sinful condition of man. Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
We are hopeless on our own
When others around him heard him crying out, they told him sternly to stop crying out.
Often times others may get in the way and try to stop someone from getting to Jesus. They don’t want to hear them cry out for mercy. For when someone cries out to Jesus for mercy, they are admitting the hopelessness of doing anything on their own to be saved from their sinful condition. Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
We will come to Jesus unashamedly letting nothing hinder us
When others tried to discourage him, Blind Bartimaeus cried even louder.
When someone is ready for Jesus, then he will let no one discourage him or get in his way. Unashamedly he will continue crying out until Jesus answers. Romans 10:11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
Salvation is for all
Jesus stopped and commanded him to be called.
Jesus calls everyone. He is no respector of persons. A few verses earlier he was calling the rich man, but the rich man rejected Him. Yes, salvation is for all. We are all called to repent of our sins and be saved, but many reject and choose not to be called. 2 Peter 3:9 . . . not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Jesus is calling you today to be saved
They called Bartimaeus and told him to be comforted because Jesus was calling him.
Perhaps this was a rebuke to those who had silenced him. How often I am rebuked as a Christian because I failed to tell others and bring them to Christ. And what a comfort it is when we finally realize that Jesus has called us to be one of His own. Is He calling you today? 2 Timothy 1:9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,
We must repent and leave our wicked ways
Bartimaeus cast away his garment, rose up and came to Jesus.
Oh what a glorious moment! Can you imagine how excited he must have been when he finally knew that Jesus was calling him! And what a glorious moment when we finally realize that Jesus has called us to be one of His very own! Immediately, Bartimaeus cast off his garment and rose up and came. Why did he cast off his garment? Maybe it was because it was dirty and tattered and he was embarrassed to be in the presence of Jesus with it. When we come to Jesus we must cast away the garments of sin. We must repent and turn to Him. He will clothe us with his righteousness and make us a new man. Acts 3:19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
We must be willing to admit that we are blind in our sins.
After hearing Jesus ask what it was that Bartimaeus wanted, he responded with Lord, that I might receive my sight.
Bartimaeus had to admit that he wanted to receive his sight. We too must realize that we are blind in our sins and the only way we can see is to accept the truth that Jesus is the only way. Romans 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
We will realize that faith in Jesus alone will save us
And what did Jesus say? Go your way – your faith has made you whole.
He didn’t say that your sight has to be earned. He immediately healed him because of the man’s faith that Jesus would do it. You can immediately be saved if you believe. God’s grace saves us through faith, not through anything that we can do of ourselves. Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Just as Bartimaeus was healed physically, we too are healed spiritually when we come to Jesus by faith.
We will desire to follow Him daily
As soon as Bartimaeus received his sight, he followed Jesus.
As soon as we receive Jesus we will want to follow Him. There should be no other choice. No, it is not, now I can do as I please because I’ve been saved by grace. But instead it should be, what does the Lord want me to do. Follow Him day by day. Luke 9:23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
Today, are you a hopeless beggar in need of the mercy of God. Throw off the garments of sin. Repent and turn to Christ. Call out to Him for mercy because without it you are condemned to hell. John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. Don’t you hear Him calling you? He is calling anyone who will listen and come to Him. You can come to the Savior today, find forgiveness of sin and new life in Christ.
